Cannabis + Fertility/Pregnancy & the Postpartum Era, Part 1

I gave an in-depth talk atYo San University’s Integrative Fertility Symposium in March. It was fascinating to discover all of the ways that this “health food” cannabis, was detrimental to fertility in both men and women.

I have found in that speaking to people on this topic, some have very strong opinions about its use in pregnancy, the preconception and post conception era. I like to  discuss research. As a researcher, I believe in research based evidence. I have not had many people able to discuss these issues in a research based shelf with me. However, I always invite it. I want to learn new things!

At this point, during the preconception era both animal and human studies show that cannabis use can shrink testicles. It can erode sperm an egg quality, and . My experience as a clinician, lecturer, professor and researcher helped me take on this complicated topic. I find this subject so fascinating, despite the fact that it has not yet garnered much attention in the field of fertility.

The talk I gave was called The Endocannabinoid System and Fertility:
Current Research and Clinical Guidelines. Please see the description used during the symposium below:

Cannabis is legal in many states and countries around the world. However, research into the role of the endocannabinoid system in fertility, pregnancy and postpartum is in its infancy. This complex system was discovered in the early 1990’s and is a mystery to many medical providers. In my presentation we will elucidate the role and function of the endocannabinoid system and the impact of phytocannabinoids on male and female fertility. In addition, current research on the role of phytocannabinoids in gestation, the postpartum era, and the potential impact of cannabis on future generations will be discussed.

I surveyed over 50 research studies in preparation for this presentation. Below are some of the key takeaways:

  1. Cannabis has been used in the Middle East and in Europe for thousands of years for painful periods and musculoskeletal disorders.
  2. We have our own endocannabinoid system (only discovered in the early 1990’s!) which is responsible for regulating every aspect of our body including the digestive immune, and male/female reproductive systems, and so much more.
  3. There is substantial evidence that taking cannabis is not good for fertility, pregnancy or the postpartum phase. In fact, it may lead to lasting consequences for your child.
  4. Acupuncture can regulate the endocannabinoid system. The modulation of this system may be one of the ways acupuncture reduces pain and inflammation.

I am in the process of turning my talk into a journal article and a continuing education class for providers. As I do this, I will be posting on topics of interest like: What is the endocannabinoid system? What does cannabis do to male and female fertility? Why is cannabis used and what are some alternatives during the preconception phase?

So, stay on the lookout for Parts 2, 3 &4 of this series! I really enjoyed learning about cannabis and its effects on fertility, pregnancy and the postpartum era. I can not wait to share it with you in future posts!
