Ancient Wisdom: The Cornerstone of My Healing Philosophy

The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine is the oldest book in Chinese medical history, dating back over 4,000 years. It forms the foundation of East Asian medicine theory. It is divided into two parts: The Ling Shu and The Su Wen. These texts explain acupuncture techniques and the principles of East Asian medical theory. As a healer following in this ancient practice as well as modern traditions, I base my philosophy on health and healing upon this ancient wisdom.

Acupuncture: Guiding You to Wellness

The component of The Yellow Emperor’s Classic that details acupuncture techniques has been translated as the The Spiritual Pivot. Loosley translated, this name conveys the message that acupuncture can guide or assist patients in pivoting towards better health. Another name for this text is The Spiritual Compass. Again, the message is the same, at its core, acupuncture aims to guide patients back to their true selves, which inherently means a state of wellness.

Illuminating East Asian Medical Philosophy and Healing Approaches

The Su Wen reveals the intricacies of East Asian medical philosophy through a dialogue between the Yellow Emperor and his advisors. They discuss our connection to nature, the aging process, how we fall ill, and how the world around us influences our health. This format was chosen to reflect the ideal the doctor-patient relationship.

For example, many patients come to me in pain and confusion, seeking understanding and treatment for their physical/emotional discomfort. Together, we explore the root causes of their ailments and develop a personalized treatment plan, which may include acupuncture, herbal formulas, diet and lifestyle counseling, heat therapy, cupping, or modern methods of discovery such as conventional and cutting edge laboratory testing.

Empowering Patients Through Knowledge

During the path of our journey, inevitably our roles reverse as the patient gains a deeper understanding of their symptoms, causation and their path to health. For example, a patient with knee pain may come to me for symptomatic relief of their pain, but by the end of our journey they will be able to tell me the causes of their knee pain, how to avoid it, and how to make that symptom better on their own.

In my opinion, this is the definition of true health. I serve as an advisor, offering compassion, knowledge and empathy while guiding patients towards their highest goal of well-being. Ultimately, the power to heal lies in the hands of my patients, and I strive to assist them in understanding and using this power on their healing journey.

The Doctor as a Teacher

Education forms the bedrock of my practice. The world doctor means “to teach” in latin. I aim to empower my patients with knowledge to make informed decisions about their health, and embark on a path of not just healing, but self-discovery. I hold profound admiration for my patients, valuing their deep commitment to their well-being.
